India needs to increase wheat production to meet future demand

Bangalore, Feb 7(UNI) The two-day seminar on 'Wheat and Wheat Products -- Vision 2020' will begin here tomorrow to focus on increasing the wheat production to meet the future demand.

The seminar, organised by Wheat Products Promotion Society, would be inaugurated by Union Minister of State for Consumer Affairs and Public Distribution Akhilesh Prasad Singh, Chairman of the Organising Committee and micro nutrition and food processing consultant Vinod Kapoor said.

Speaking to the press he said that the country produced 75 mt of wheat currently and it had to take it up to at least 100 mt production in 2020 to meet the needs of the growing population.

A technical session would be held on trade and commerce and world wide wheat position during the current financial year. The seminar would also bring out an up-to-date status of the world wheat production, prices and forecast.

"Experts and analysts both from overseas and India will talk about factors that would influence our decision making process," he said.

Another session on milling and baking would have expert speakers from related industries make presentations on next generation technologies, he said.
