Gorkha Janamukti Morcha activists start hunger strike

Siliguri, Feb 7 (UNI) Altogether 63 activists of Gorkha Janamukti Morcha (GJM) today began an indefinite hunger strike in three hill sub-divisions demanding scraping of the 6th Schedule status for Darjeeling.

The agitators, sat in batches of 21 each at Darjeeling, Kurseong, and Kalinpong, displayed placards demanding no further extension to Darjeeling Gorkha Hill Council's caretaker Chairman Subash Ghising, whose present term expired on March 23.

The activists, led by GJM central committee member Urmila Zima, also demanded a visit of Parliament Standing Committee Chairperson Sushma Swaraj and West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee to visit the hill as people did not want the 6th Schedule status.

The GJM, recently founded by Bimal Gurung, a former close aid of Subash Ghising, is demanding a separate Gorkhaland state.

Meanwhile, Mr Ghising left here yesterday for New Delhi for talks with Ms Swaraj. Mr Bhattachajee also in New Delhi now. State Chief Secretary Amit Kiran Dev is expected to leave for Delhi for a tri-partite talks on Darjeeling's new status.

K'taka Governor withdraws AP Council member's nomination

Bangalore, Feb 7 (UNI) Karnataka Governor Rameshwar Thakur today withdrew the nomination of Andhra Pradesh State Legislative Council member Rajalakshmi to the Syndicate of State Women's University. An order to this effect was issued by the Governor, who is also Chancellor of the Universities in the State, according to a Raj Bhavan communique here. The nomination of Ms Rajalakshmi had received a widespread criticism from political leaders and pro-Kannada activists. UNI MSP.....

Amend IPC to curb crimes against women: NWC

Mysore, Feb 7 (UNI) The National Women Commission (NWC) has sought amendment to the Indian Penal Code (IPC) to make it more gender sensitive and provid for stringent punishment for crimes against women, NWC member Nirmala Venkatesh said today. Speaking to newspersons here, she said the recommendation would be submitted to the Centre shortly. Ms Venkatesh said an amendment was necessary in the wake of growing crimes against the dignity of women.....

CM directs police to beef up security

Panaji, Feb 7 (UNI) Chief Minister Digamber Kamat has directed police officials to tighten security at crowded places, especially beaches, of the state as a precautionary measure, as two suspected terrorists from Hyderabad and Karnataka went unnoticed despite their stay in the city guesthouse. Riyazuddin Nasir from Hyderabad and Asadullah Basha from Hospet, who are suspected to have masterminded a plan to blow-up crowded beaches in the northern parts of Goa on the night.....
