Amend IPC to curb crimes against women: NWC

Mysore, Feb 7 (UNI) The National Women Commission (NWC) has sought amendment to the Indian Penal Code (IPC) to make it more gender sensitive and provid for stringent punishment for crimes against women, NWC member Nirmala Venkatesh said today.

Speaking to newspersons here, she said the recommendation would be submitted to the Centre shortly.

Ms Venkatesh said an amendment was necessary in the wake of growing crimes against the dignity of women in the country.

Human trafficking was reported from Maharashtra, Goa, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Orissa. The NWC had sought monetary relief of Rs two to Rs five lakh to rape victims as compensations, she added.

Meeting at LG House to discuss Jama Masjid development plan

New Delhi, Feb 7 (UNI) A meeting was today held at the Lt Governor's Secretariat in Delhi to discuss the various objections and queries about the redevelopment plan of the Jama Masjid drafted by the MCD. The meeting, chaired by the Principal Secretary to the LG R Chandra Mohan and attended by the MCD Zonal Deputy Commissioner Vijay Singh, discussed various queries raised by Delhi Assembly Deputy Shoiab Iqbal and councillors Khurram Iqbal and Ubaid.....

Environment Ministry not happy with state of CDM market

New Delhi, Feb 7 (UNI) Union Environment and Forests Secretary Meena Gupta today called for correction of the Clean development Mechanism (CDM) market to make it more meaningful in mitigating carbon emissions. ''In today's CDM market, there are many imperfection like high transaction costs and exclusion of small and medium scale industries which needed to be removed,'' she said. Ms Gupta's remarks came while chairing a session on 'Mitigation and Adaptation Policies for Sustainable Development'.....

Three of a family killed in accident

Hoshiarpur, Feb 7 (UNI) Three members of a family were killed and an eight-month old child was injured, when the vehicle on which they were travelling was hit by a speeding truck near Bagol Khurd on Jalandhar-Pathankot national highway near here today. According to the police sources, the deceased were identified as Harmesh Singh (35), a resident of Kurala village, his wife Manjit Kaur (32) and daughter Jaswinder Kaur (5). His eight-month old younger daughter.....
