Religious rituals banned at Sukhna lake

Chandigarh, Feb 6 (UNI) To maintain the fragile eco-balance of Sukhna Lake, Chandigarh Administration has prohibited the performing of religious ceremonies and rituals at this major tourist spot in the City Beautiful.

District Magistrate R.K. Rao today issued the prohibition orders under section 144 CrPC, to ban practices like floating of lighted earthen lamp, pouring mustard oil, immersion of idols and prayer materials like coconuts, incense and flowers and bursting of fire crackers near the lake.

Performing of these rituals was causing noise and water pollution and was also disturbing the eco-balance in the 'Silence Zone' of Sukhna Lake, which is home to many a species of water fowl.

The order would come into force from tomorrow and would be effective up to April 7.

Jaya appeals to Mamata to call off her fast

Chennai, Dec 27: Former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and AIADMK Supremo J Jayalalithaa has appealed to Trinamool Congress President Mamata Banerjee to call off her fast, which entered 24th day today. A release from the AIADMK office tonight said, Ms Jayalalithaa had written a letter to Mamata Banerjee appealing her to call off the fast. Ms Jayalalithaa also telephoned her and urged her to call off the fast, the release added. A.....
