Forward Bloc-sponsored "Bangla Bandh" a new twist to bengal politics

Kolkata, Feb 6 (UNI) The Forward Bloc-sponsored 12-hour ''Bangla Bandh'' has added a new dimension to the Left politics in the state, according to West Bengal Congress working president Pradip Bhattacharjee today.

Talking to newsmen here, he said the bandh was total and spontaneous, adding all the Opposition parties, including the Congress, SUCI, Trinamool Congress, CPI(ML)-Liberation and Samajwadi Party had extended support to the bandh.

It had given jolt to the Left Front govenment in its 30-year rule, Mr Bhattacharjee said.

It was strange that the CPI(M)-led Left Front government was firing at their own partners and '' We feel a crack has already taken place in the Front, '' he asserted.

The state politics might undergo a radical change after this incident, he stated.

At least six people were killed and several injured when police fired to quell a 15,000-strong campaign Forward Bloc rallyists at Dinhata in Coochbehar yesterday.

CPI(M) terms today's "Bangla Bandh" "unsuccessful"

Kolkata, Feb 6 (UNI) The CPI (M) said today's Forward Bloc-sponsored 24-hour ''Bangla Bandh'' had failed to evoke any spontaneous response from the people all over the state. In a statement here, the party said the Forward Bloc supporters resorted to road and rail blockade, preventing people from attending offices. However, functioning in the industrial and tea belts was almost as usual, the statement added. The bandh protagonists had damaged several buses and tried to disrupt.....

Forward Bloc-sponsored 24-hour "Bangla Bandh" reduced to 12 hours

Kolkata, Feb 6 (UNI) Forward Bloc State Secretary Ashok Ghosh today withdrew the party-sponsored 24-hour ''Bangla Bandh'', reducing it to 12 hours. Addressing a press meet here, Mr Ghosh said, '' Considering the inconveniencies suffered by the stranded passengers all over the state, we have reduced the bandh duration to 12 hours from 24 hours. '' The bandh, which started at 0600 hours this morning, would end at 1800 hours instead of 0600 hours tomorrow.....
