Devotees take dip in sea on 'Thai Amavasya'

Rameswaram, Tamil Nadu, Feb 6 (UNI) Thousands of devotees from various parts of the country took a holy dip in the sea off the coast here on the occasion of "Thai Amavasya," (new moon in the Tamil month of 'Thai').

The belief is the souls of forefathers visit the earth to bless their descendents.

At the historic Sri Ramanathaswamy Temple, thousands of people visited the 'Agnitheertha Kadarkarai' (sea shore) to offer poojas to forefathers.

Special prayers were also offered to 'Navagrahas' at Navapashanam - Devipattinam.

A procession carrying the idols of Lord Shiva, Lord Ram and Sita from the temple reached 'Agnitheertha Kadarkarai' for special poojas.

In North India, the day is observed as "Mauni Amavasya" when many Hindus observe complete silence for a day.

Forward Bloc-sponsored 24-hour "Bangla Bandh" reduced to 12 hours

Kolkata, Feb 6 (UNI) Forward Bloc State Secretary Ashok Ghosh today withdrew the party-sponsored 24-hour ''Bangla Bandh'', reducing it to 12 hours. Addressing a press meet here, Mr Ghosh said, '' Considering the inconveniencies suffered by the stranded passengers all over the state, we have reduced the bandh duration to 12 hours from 24 hours. '' The bandh, which started at 0600 hours this morning, would end at 1800 hours instead of 0600 hours tomorrow.....

Bandh hits life in Bodoland area in Assam

Kokrajhar, Feb 6 (UNI) Two simultaneous bandhs and rail blockades, called by separate organistaions, affected life in Assam's Bodoland Territorial Area Districts (BTAD) today. The Bodo People's Forum for Peace and Writers had called for a 36-hour Assam bandh, which began today. Though the bandh failed to evoke response in the rest of the state,it affectred life in the Bodo areas. No untoward incident has been reported so far, with three picketers arrested.....

LNJ Bhilwara, Glitnir ink JV to develop geothermal power plants

New Delhi, Feb 6 (UNI) LNJ Bhilwara, a vertically integrated textile and clothing group, today said that it has formed a joint venture with Glitnir, the North European bank headquartered in Iceland, to develop geothermal power plants in India and Nepal. The JV is proposed to be a 60:40 partnership with Glitnir holding 40 per cent stake. Glitnir will also be opening a representative office in India. The JV will recruit a management team that.....
