New Delhi, Feb 6 (UNI) The Delhi administration today urged the Centre to sanction more post in Delhi police to help it tackle the emerging challenges of terrorism, rising crime due to population growth and for effectively holding Commonwealth Games.
At a meeting Chaired by Home Minister Shivraj Patil here, Delhi Lt Governor Tajinder Khanna and Delhi Police Commissioner Y S Dadhwal highlighted the challenges being faced by the Delhi police and demanded that its manpower be strengthened by sanctioning of more posts.
The Home Minister asked the Delhi administration to present a detailed proposal in this regard and assured that the demand for sanctioning additional posts be considered by the cabinet. However, the union territory must first fill all the vacancies in the police force, he pointed out.
The Lt Governor said population of Delhi has increased tremendously during recent time and its present strength of approximately about 60,000 police personnel were totally inadequate to deal with the rising incidents of crime.
Moreover, the coming Commonwealth Games in 2010 would require more police deployment for the smooth conduct of games in which players from across the world would participate, he pointed out.
The one-and-a-half hour long meeting deliberated on various ways by which the manpower crunch of Delhi police could be tackled effectively both by way of additional posts and filling up of vacancies.
