Cabinet approves screening of neonates

Panaji, Feb 6 (UNI) Goa Cabinet today gave a nod to screen new born babies in government hospitals for any deformities as per the recommendation of the Health Advisory Council.

Chief Minister Digamber Kamat, in the presence of his Cabinet colleagues Vishwajit Rane and Jose Philip D'Souza, speaking to mediapersons after the Cabinet meeting, said Goa is the first state to take a decision to screen new born babies within 48 hours.

Mr Kamat said this will be mandatory in all government hospitals so as to benefit the economically-weaker sections who, otherwise, would be required to have such screening done in private hospitals by paying high fee.

The Cabinet has also approved the proposal to give senior grade to undergraduate and graduate teachers who have put in 12 years of service. Those who have already retired, will get two increments.

The Chief Minister said the Cabinet has also approved to enhance the Goa State Disastar Management fund from Rs 50,000 to 1 lakh.

The Chief Minister also welcomed the implemention of ''Speed Governors'' for heavy vehicles and said it is a good decision taken by the goverment.
