Air India, CR in All-India KSA Veterans Football tourney semis

Mumbai, Feb 6 (UNI) Attractive vintage football was dished out, but field goals were at a premium and it was tie breaker that decided the winners in the first two quarter finals of the sixth edition of the Siro Clinpharm KSA All-India Veterans Football Tournament 2008, at the Karnatak Sports Association ground, Churchgate, here today.

While Goa XI went down to Central Railway 3-4, in the earlier match, Air India got the better half Century Rayon 4-2.

Goa XI, with a smattering of former Internationals in their ranks, delighted the goodly crowd with their ball skills and short passes and mounted innumerable raids on the Central Railway goal.

However, some stout defending on Central's part and some wayward shooting saw the match end goalless in the regulation time. In the tie breaker Central players displayed better accuracy and emerged 4-3 winners.

Central Railway should thank their goalkeeper Manoj Nair for taking them to tie breaker without conceding a goal and then bringing off a beautiful save of Elvis Pereira kick in the tie breaker.

Goa XI were well served by their captain Lawrence Gomes in the midfield, whose two goal strikes were saved by Central goalkeeper Manoj Nair. Pascal Pereira of Goa XI was good in the upfront but could not convert his chances into goals.

Inspite of Century Rayon dominating the first half and sharing the ball control with Air India in the second half, their key players Philip, Milton and Jay Anand could not score because of the alert goal keeper Vijay Swami of Air India.

Results: (Quarter Finals) Air India: 4 (Santan D'souza 1, K Raez 1, Anil Kumar 1, David Cardoz 1) bt Century Rayon 2 (Milton 1, Anil 1).

Central Railway: 4 (Asif Jamal 1, Pascol Pereira 1, Thomas Castellino 1, Augusto D'silva 1) bt Goa XI 3 (Lawrence Gomes 1, Inacio Vigas 1, Xavier Colaco 1).
