Hema Malini becomes baseball federation chief patron

Chandigarh, Feb 3 (UNI) Film actress-turned-politician Hema Malini today extended her full support to Women Baseball Federation of India(WBFI) and accepted the post of chief patron of the federation.

The WBFI has branched out of the Baseball Federation of India (BFI).

The organisers are confident that with Hema Malini joining WBFI, the sport would give a boost to the sportspersons, especially women of all sports disciplines which have been neglected so far.

WBFI chairman Deepak Joshi echoed the sentiments of Hema Malini that there was a need to change the mindset of society towards women.

Main thrust of the WBFI is on rural area which is full of talent and just need to harness it. Joshi`s main motive behind sports promotion is to give every player a dignified living and giving carrier options.

His vision is to create Chandigarh 'A Sport`s Tourist Destination' which will be a boost to the country and Chandigarh in particular by bringing in international sports to India. The WBFI has started the first ever Baseball Academy for providing training to the players from March 14 here.

The WBFI and the BFI will be holding Baseball Nationals for men and women from Feburary 21 here. The WBFI will be holding World Women Baseball Championship in October in which about eight countries are participated to take part.

An Indian Baseball League (IBL) will begin on February 21 next year to promote baseball and Sports Tourism in Chandigarh in which 10 teams are scheduled to compete.

Lee expresses confidence in Aussie bowling

Brisbane, Feb 3 (UNI) Dissappointed by Shaun Tait's absence from cricket, Australia pace spearhead Brett Lee reposed faith in the new look bowling line-up and said his team has the depth in bowling to cope against best batsmen. ''It's not nice that we haven't got Shaun to pick from,'' Lee said. ''But we have got a great bowling squad including Clark and Ashley Noffke, who bowled very well. Punjab crash out of national women hockey championship

Jalandhar, Feb 3 (UNI) Former champions Punjab, crashed out of the 55th Rakshak Senior Women Hockey National Championship, going down 3-2 to Jharkhand in a Pool-B match at the Surjit Singh hockey stadium here today. Jharkhand shot into the lead in the 25th minute of the match, but the hosts drew parity in the 32nd minute by converting a penalty corner. Both teams remained level at 1-1 at the end of the first half. Punjab again.....

Karthikeyan battles bravely in front of over 300 Indian fans

Sydney, Feb 3 (UNI) Narain Karthikeyan brought his years of experience into play to skillfully steer his way from the very back of the grid to finish the feature race at 11th place for A1 team India in the A1GP World Cup of Motorsport here today. A1 Team India had a tough 19th place starting position on the grid for the 42-lap feature race which left them open to the risk of potentially damaging midfield.....
