Forest Department to observe 'Kandla Divas' on Feb 6

Udupi, Feb 3 (UNI) In a bid to raise awareness among farmers, fishermen and the general public about the importance of Mangrove, the forest department would observe February 6 as 'Kandla Divas' (Mangrove Day), said Rajkumar Srivastav, the Deputy Conservator of Forest (DCF), Kundapura Division here.

Talking to newspersons here yesterday, he said of the 8.7 sq km Kandla forest in Karnataka, two sq km was existing at Kundapura in Udupi, besides several coastal parts in Daxina Kannada and Uttar Kannda districts.

He said the forest department was attempting for the last two decades to develop Kandlavan in the available waste-land along the coast of Karnataka. 'Mangalvan', a Kandla forest, was attracting nature lovers and the researchers, he added.

Mr Rajkumar said despite efforts by the State Government, misuse of nature by the local people, posed a constraint for the preservation of Kandlavan. Public awareness, was the need of the hour, he added.

Haryana govt to waive surcharge on private power generation

Faridabad, Feb 3 (UNI) Haryana Power Minister Randeep Singh Surjewala said that there was a possibility of generating about 300 MW of power in Faridabad and Gurgaon through private generator system and the State Government would give benefit of waiving the surcharge on the same. The Power Minister informed this while addressing the mediapersons after presiding over the monthly meeting of the District Public Relations and Grievances Committee at the Faridabad Nagar Nigam Auditorium today......

Punjab crash out of national women hockey championship

Jalandhar, Feb 3 (UNI) Former champions Punjab, crashed out of the 55th Rakshak Senior Women Hockey National Championship, going down 3-2 to Jharkhand in a Pool-B match at the Surjit Singh hockey stadium here today. Jharkhand shot into the lead in the 25th minute of the match, but the hosts drew parity in the 32nd minute by converting a penalty corner. Both teams remained level at 1-1 at the end of the first half. Punjab again.....
