Congress demands adequate security for its leaders

Agartala, Feb 3: The Tripura Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) has urged the Union Home Ministry to provide adequate security arrangements for the prominent leaders of the party, who are scheduled to hold a public rally ahead of the Assembly elections on February 23.

Former Chief Minister and TPCC election wing chief Sudhir Ranjan Majumder told the sources here today, ''Intelligence reports have revealed that security threat continues ahead of the elections and reportedly banned militant outfits of the region have threatened to carry out subversive activities.

''We have spoken to Union Home Minister Shivraj Patil and requested him to look into the matter on urgent basis and send immediate instructions to the poll-bound states of the Northeast - Tripura, Meghalaya and Nagaland,'' Mr Majumder said.

Meanwhile, the state Home department assured adequate security for the political leaders and star campaigners of different parties while special measures had already been taken to ensure security during election.

''We shall take adequate security measures to prevent any kind of untoward incident by the extremists and additional paramilitary forces would be dispatched by the Centre to help the states,'' state Director General of Police K T D Singh said.

Tripura: B'desh offers Multi-Protocol; Sherpur port

Agartala, May 16: With consistent efforts by Indian authorities, Bangladesh has finally agreed to offer Multi-Protocol status to Sherpur river port for carrying goods by water-way from other parts of India to Tripura via Kolkata. Official sources here today said that as per the agreement, Bangladesh would allow India to use both water and surface transport for carrying goods from Kolkata to Agartala via Sherpur.
