Centre to implement 54 per cent reservation for OBC

Thiruvananthapuram, Feb 3 (UNI) Union Finance Minister P Chidambaram today said that the Centre was committed to implementing the decision for providing 54 per cent reservation for Other Backward Classes (OBC) in higher education sector.

Inaugurating the 'Professorship' for Kerala University's Institute of Management, by State Bank of Travancore (SBT) here, he said though the Government has taken a decision in this regard due to certain hurdles it was not implemented.

However, the hurdles were now removed and it would be implemented soon, he said, and added that the capacity of existing institutions should be expanded for achieving this goal.

The Government would provide support to the private sector to start institutions in the country, he added.

Mr Chidambaram said side by side the Government and the private sector should come forward to promote education and transform India into a knowledge based and wealth creating country.
