Mangalore, Feb 2 (UNI) The committee under the Ministry of Environment and Forest which convened a public hearing meeting, to hear the grievances from the public on Mangalore Special Economic Zone project (MSEZ), witnessed commotion and protest here today.
Initially all the assembled people were not allowed to participate in the meeting. The people raised protest when the officials denied the entry to the media also to cover the event.
Ultimately bowing to the pressure, the officials allowed the presspersons into the hall to cover the proceedings.
Large number of farmers from the villages Permude, Yekkaru, Soorinje and Delanthabettu expressed their deep displeasure over forceful acquisition of their lands for the proposed project. They had also expressed their anguish over the proposed Petroleum, Chemicals, Petrochemical Investment Region (PCPIR).
The district unit Karnataka Rajya Raitha Sangha (KRRS) President N S Varma warned that if the proposed project was set up then the people would demand for a separate statehood for the district.
Expressing objection over the project, KRRS Secretary Sunny D'Souza said, ''if you want to go ahead with the project, give cyanide to all farmers and do whatever you want.'' The Bala Town Panchayat Vice President Gregory Patrao said that there was no need of industries in the name of SEZs. Even the assurances given during the commissioning of MRPL project had not yet been fulfilled, he pointed out and climed that the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) was also not done properly.
Udupi MP Manorama Madhwaraj while expressing her support to the people opposing the MSEZ project said that there was no need of SEZ in the coastal belt.
