Mayawati to PM: Grant quotas for SC Muslim-Christian converts

Lucknow, Feb 1: Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati has written a letter to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh seeking ''additional reservation'' for SCs who have converted either to Islam or Christianity. Playing the reservation card Ms Mayawati had recently announced that private sector firms executing projects for the state government would have job quotas, a decision she claimed was the first of its kind in the country.

Besides, a decision to provide reservations in public-private partnership projects was taken at a Cabinet meeting. In her letter to Dr Singh, Ms Mayawati has claimed that the social and economic condition of SCs who had converted to other religions was the same as SCs in Hindu religion. She has also requested the Prime Minister to remove the 50 per cent reservation limit for Scheduled Castes set by the Supreme Court. The Bahujan Samaj Party president also suggested a constitutional amendment to provide Muslim and Christian Dalits additional reservation and adding the same in the IXth Schedule.

The letter claimed that Para III Presidential Order of 1950 debarred such people from getting reservation.
