Bijapur, Karnataka, Jan 27: In a tragic incident ten persons, including seven belonging to a single family were crushed to death and 15 others were seriously injured when a stone slabs laden lorry capsized near Doni river bridge in this district today.
Police said the mishap occurred as the lorry turned turtle when it hit a stone while negotiating a bend, just before the river bridge near Tikota, killing seven persons of Madhar family and three others. The injured had been admitted to the district hospital.
The lorry was going from Gulbarga to Karad in Maharashtra and about 35 persons, all of them poor labourers going to the neighbouring state in search of jobs, were travelling atop the vehicle. The dead included two women and two children. The driver of the lorry had been arrested.
The dead were identified as Satyavva Madhar (22), Seetavva Madhar (35), Shivalingappa Madhar (40), Ramesh Madhar (8), Amarasidda Madhar (55) Muttappa Madhar (25), Sharanappa Madhar (28), Appanna Kolluri (45), Nagappa (48) and Renuka (12), police said.
