Army captain, ULFA militants killed in encounter

Guwahati, Jan 27 (UNI) An Army captain and two ULFA militants were killed in an encounter in Assam's Tinsukia district today.

Deceased captain S K Choudhury was one of the recipients of the Sena medal in yesterday's Republic Day function.

Army sources here informed that the encounter between the militants and 7/11 Gorkha Regiment took place at Borpathar, under Doomdooma police station, at about 1300 hours.

Captain Choudhury, who was seriously wounded in the encounter, was immediately evacuated to the nearest Army hospital at Dinjan by a special helicopter, but he was declared dead on arrival at the hospital.

One of the slain militants, identified as 'corporal' Pipla Moran, was out on bail after being arrested two months ago. The other militant was yet to be identified.

One AK 56 rifle and several rounds of ammunition were recovered from the slain militants.

Army sources added six other ULFA rebels managed to escape.One of them was injured but managed to drag himself away.

The Army had launched a massive combing operation to nab them, they said.
