Kochi, Jan 21: The Naval Ship Repair Yard (NSRY) today organised a national seminar on ' Modern trends in Ship Maintenance' and an exibition to commemorate its Diamond Jubilee.

The seminar focused on the modern trends and technological advancements in ship maintenance and methodologies adopted for cost effective and timely ship repairing, according to an official release. Technical papers on emerging trends in maintenance philosophy, technological advancements in watertight integrity of the ships and diagnostic and non-destructive testing of material were presented.

Attended by delegates from Navy, Defence Research Organisations, private and public sector shipyards, educational institutions and industries from marine sector, the seminar was inaugurated by Vice Admiral Sunil K Damle, Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief of Southern Naval Command.

The technical exhibition provided a unique opportunity for firms associated with repair and refits of ships to exhibit their products. The yard was established on January 21, 1948 as a Base Repair Organisation to repair Royal Indian Naval Ships based here.

From a primitive workshop with 26 personnel, the yard had grown manifold over the years to its present strength of 1,100 employees with the setting-up of new facilities such as modern slipway and advanced workshop for repairs of propulsion and weapon systems.
