New Delhi, Jan 16: Charging the CBI with trying to ''scuttle'' the 1984 riots case against Congress leader Jagdish Tytler, the All India Sikh Conference (Babbar) today claimed fake witnesses were being presented by the agency rather than the real ones.

Recalling the example of Jasbir Singh, one of the prime witnesses in the case, AISC (B) president Gurcharan Singh Babbar said if the CBI did not abroad 56 times in connection with the Bofors issue, why could not it go once to the United States to take his statement in such a serious case in which about 5,000 people were killed.

''The CBI was working under pressure from 'high-ups' in the government to finish off the case and give a clean chit to Mr Tytler,''he claimed.

Claiming that a senior CBI official told him that they were under pressure to finish the case soon, Mr Babbar said if the case was wrapped under suspicious circumstances the faith of the people would be shaken.

''We demand that Home Minister Shivraj Patil investigate who all were exerting pressure on the CBI to finish the case so that the name of the investigating agency may not be dragged into any controversy in disposing of the case under political pressure.'' Jasbir Singh was willing to make a statement as an eyewitness of Jagdish Tytler who claimed, told his followers to indulge in ''Sikh carnage'', and disclose other important details related to the case, he said ''Instead Mr Tytler is trying to wriggle out of the case by hoisting a fake Succha Singh, with whom Jasbir had shared what he saw and heard from the Congress leader's,'' he added.

Mr Babbar said he was willing to come out with certain other specific proofs in the case and wanted to do so formally. But the CBI had not asked for his version despite the fact that he offered to provide substantial proof regarding the 1984 anti-Sikh riots case.
