Led by India Cements Managing Director N Srinivasan, the manufacturers called on Chief Minister M Karunanidhi at the Secretariat this afternoon and gave a joint consent letter offering to bring down the price, official sources said.
In the joint letter, they assured to make available 20 lakh bags rpt 20 lakh bags of cement per month to be sold at Rs 200 per bag in the open market.As of now, prices were hovering around Rs 240 to Rs 260 a bag.
The manufacturers gave an assurance to take a positive decision on reducing the cement prices and conveying it to the Chief Minister by January ten following which they met Mr Karunanidhi on January seven.
The decision by the manufacturers to reduce the cement price was a sequel to the steps taken by the State Government to bring down the prices.
After announcing its decision to sell imported cement through the state-owned Civil Supplies Corporation in a bid to bring down the prices, the DMK Government sounded a warning saying it would have no option but to take over the private cement companies if they failed to bring down the prices.
