Year 2007, Puducherry came under VAT regime

Puducherry, Dec 28 (UNI) The implementation of Value Added Tax was one of the significant developments the union territory of Puducherry witnessed in the outgoing year.

The Union Territory was brought under the VAT regime with effect from July 1 through an ordinance issued by the Lt Governor on June 2 which was later replaced with a Bill adopted in the Monsoon session of the Assembly. The Bill had since become an act following assent by the President.

On the political front, Congress member M Kandasamy was inducted into the Rangasamy Cabinet in place of Mr Angalan who resigned from the post of the welfare minister following certain allegations against him. With Mr Kandasamy swearing in on June 17, the strength of the Rangasamy Cabinet rose to six.

Three nominated members were inducted into the legislative Assembly on April 23 brining the strength in the Assembly to 33 (30 elected and three nominated). The members inducted were Mr Thyagarajan of Congress, Na Ra Kalainathan of the CPI and N G Panneerselvam of the PMK.

Union Panchayati Raj Minister Mani Shankar Aiyer and Puducherry Chief Minister N Rangasamy signed a Memorandum of Understanding on January 11 to devolve powers and demarcate subjects to the elected local body representatives. However, they, who assumed office in July 2006 are yet to get powers and organsing agitations for it.

Union Home Minister Shivraj Patil visited Puducherry on January 20 to review the tsunami relief and rehabiliation works and expressed satisfaction at the pace of them.

The inauguration of the Jawaharlal Nehru National Science Exihibition for Children 2007 by President Pratibha Patil December 21, introduction of 80 smart schools in the union territory, Visit of Ambassador of Russian Federation to India Vyacheglavak I Trubnikov, Australian Consulate-General and trade commssioner for south India Aminur Rehman, and signing of Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with different organisations and firms are the important events held during the year 2007 in the union territory.

National basketball league in October 2008

Puducherry, Dec 28: The Basketball Federation of India (BFI) proposed to launch a national basketball league in October 2008, according to BFI Secretary General Harish Sharma. In a chat with newspersons on the sidelines of the 58th senior national basketball championship here last evening, he said the top six finishers of the championship would compete in the league. The teams would be permitted to have two guest players, either locals or foreigners. The league would be conducted for a month.....

Pak reacts negatively to Benazir's assassination

Lahore, Dec 28: Across-section of people in Pakistan are mourning the loss of former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto, who was assassinated in Rawalpindi"s Liaqat Bagh area late on Thursday evening. Most business centers have downed shutters, while public transportation has gone off the roads. A majority of citizens described the incident as a black day in the history of Pakistan. Muhammad Aslam, a businessman said, “We have been deprived of an internationally acclaimed political leader whose presence in Pakistan.....
