Virbhadra ''surprised'';Dhumal vows to probe ''corrupt deals''

Shimla, Dec 28 (UNI) While Congress Chief Minister Virbhadara Singh today conceded his ''surprise defeat'' to the BJP in Himachal, BJP's elated Chief Ministerial candidate Prem Kumar Dhumal said his government would order inquiries into all cases of corruption during the pprevious regime.

Conceding defeat State Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh said the party was ''surprised'' by the results and it would analyse the results in due course.

He said the party would play a ''positive role'' of the opposition inside and outside the assembly and added that ''victory and defeat are part of the game''.

A visibly happy Mr Dhumal, on the other hand, expressed satisfaction over the results and said his government would order inquiries into all cases of corruption during the Congress government and punish the guilty.

''None of the guilty, whosoever, will be spared and innocent will not be touched,'' the former chief minister asserted.

Terming the BJP victory in the elections a ''mandate for change and peoples' victory'', he said his government would initiate steps for the balanced and uniform development of the state.

The BJP leaders began celebrations soon after the trends showed that it was poised to win the Himachal Assembly elections.

Coffee Board unveils new variety of coffee plant

Bangalore, Dec 28 (UNI) To provide a new thrust to coffee industry, Coffee Board today unveiled a new variety of Arabica coffee plant 'Chandragiri', which would be planted in 30 per cent of the coffee grown area during the next ten years. Coffee industry is hit hard by pest problems and ageing plantation, and the new variety developed by the Board at its Central Coffee Research Centre at Balehonnur in Karnataka, which is resistant to leaf frost and promises superior bean.....

Four houses set on fire by TPC ultras

Daltonagnj, Dec 28 (UNI) The Tritiya Prastuti Committee (TPC) ultras set on fire four houses in Goriachora village under Hussainabad police station area in Palamu district of Jharkhand early today. Holland scholar prepares English database of Lepcha bird names

Gangtok, Dec 28 (UNI) Being born naturalists, the Lepchas, the indigenous tribal community nestled in the Sikkim Himalayan region posses a vast undocumented dictionary of the rich biodiversity in their natural habitat. And this aboriginal knowledge is being documented in English by a Holland researcher in form of a Lepcha-English dictionary.
