Virbhadra ''surprised''; Dhumal vows to probe ''corrupt deals''

Shimla, Dec 28 (UNI) Congress Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh today conceded his ''surprise defeat'' to the BJP in Himachal while BJP's elated Chief Ministerial candidate Prem Kumar Dhumal said his government would order inquiries into all cases of corruption during the previous regime.

Conceding defeat, Mr Virbhadra Singh said the party was ''surprised'' by the results and it would analyse them in due course.

He said the party would play a ''positive role'' of the opposition inside and outside the assembly adding that ''victory and defeat are part of the game''.

A visibly happy Mr Dhumal, on the other hand, expressed satisfaction over the results and said his government would order inquiries into all cases of corruption during the Congress government and punish the guilty.

''None of the guilty, whosoever, will be spared and innocent will not be touched,'' Mr Dhumal asserted.

Terming the BJP victory in the elections a ''mandate for change and peoples' victory'', he said his government would initiate steps for the balanced and uniform development of the state.

The BJP leaders began celebrations soon after the trends showed that it was poised to win the Himachal Assembly elections.

Christian missionaries spreading hate propaganda among adivasis

Guwahati, Dec 28 (UNI) The Assam convener of the Lok Jagaran Manch Dayal, Krishna Bora, today accused the Christian missionaries in the state of trying to divide the state along communal lines. Talking to mediapersons here, he said, ''The Christian missionaries have been indulging in a hate propaganda among the Adivasis and tea tribe community in the state.'' He pointed to the arrest of two missionaries from Upper Assam last week for allegedly possessing copies of a CD with edited visuals.....

Injured by friend, girl dies in hospital

Jaunpur, Dec 28 (UNI) A 20 year-old woman who was allegedly injured by her beloved, succumbed to injuries last night in Varanasi hospital, police said today. Mamta's beloved after critically wounding her and another person in Singramau area here on Wednesday evening, committed suicide. The incident occurred in Firozpur village, where Ashvani Shukla (23) shot at his beloved Mamta of the same village. Surya Narayan Mishra (50) also sustained bullet wounds, when he tried to intervene, police added. Later,.....

President condoles Janardhan Reddy's death

New Delhi, Dec 28 (UNI) President Pratibha Devisingh Patil today condoled the death of former Andhra Pradesh Congress Legislature Party (CLP) leader and MLA P Janardhan Reddy. "Reddy will be remembered for exposuing the cause of labour welfare", the President said in a message. Reddy, representing Khairatabad constituency in the Assembly, died this morning following a heart attack. UNI.....
