'Theft informer scheme' helps curb power theft

Chandigarh, Dec 28 (UNI) Under the 'theft informer scheme' of the Dakshin Haryana Bijli Vitran Nigam (DHBVN), about 6,400 informers have given information about thefts being committed in their neighbourhood.

According to an official spokesman, on the basis of the informations, 1,094 thefts of electricity, involving a penalty of Rs 2.14 crore, were detected by the DHBVN officials and 176 of the informers claimed cash prizes of Rs 5.54 lakh.

To avail benefit under this scheme, any person can inform DHBVN about theft being committed by any unscrupulous user of electricity, without disclosing his identity. He may give some secret code. On receiving information, the DHBVN officials will give a unique registration number of the information. On detection of theft, a minimum amount of Rs 1,000 per case would be given immediately to the informer on providing secret code word and unique complaint number, the spokesman said.

If DHBVN is able to recover the assessed theft amount, 20 per cent of the amount realised, subject to maximum of Rs 50,000 would be given to the informer.

Unorganised enterprises 17.07 million ; 71% in rural areas

New Delhi, Dec 29 (UNI) The number of unorganised manufacturing enterprises is estimated at 17.07 million in India, 71 per cent of these being in rural areas, the NSS 62nd Round survey Report released here today shows. Data for 2005-06 indicates that 29 per cent of these enterprises were located in urban areas.
