Terrorism posing threat to nation's unity: Fernandes

Patna, Dec 28 (UNI) National Democratic Alliance(NDA) Convenor and former union minister George Fernandes today said terrorism is posing a serious threat to security and safety of people across the globe.

While addressing a function here, Mr Fernandes said the death of former Prime Minister of Pakistan Benazir Bhutto in a bomb-cum-gun attack yesterday was an eye-opener to the growing menace of terrorism in the civil society.

''The country is facing a serious threat to its unity and integrity from terrorism and if the Centre continues to take it lightly, there would be grave consequences in the coming days,'' he added.

Mr Fernandes alleged that the UPA government at the Centre was not discharging its duties responsbly and said the people should come forward to meet the challenge from disruptive forces in such circumstances.

Nepal's parliament passes a bill to declare Nepal a federal republic

Kathmandu, Dec 28 (UNI) Nepal's parliament has endorsed the constitutional amendment bill turning the Himalayan nation into a federal democratic republic, which will be implemented by the first meeting of constituent assembly. Speaker Subash Nemwang said that out of 273 MPs, who participated in the voting, 270 voted in favour of the constitutional amendment while three voted against it. All the major political parties were in favour of declaring the Himalayan nation a republic except the royalist Rastriya Prajatantra Party......

2 police personnel nabbed for accepting bribe in Mumbai

Mumbai, Dec 28 (UNI) Two police personnel were arrested by the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) while accepting bribe from a college professor, Assistant Commissioner of Police Pandurang Shinde said here today. Police Sub Inspector (PSI) Ravindra Maruti Ranshevare had allegedly demanded Rs 50,000 from Bhavans College (Economics) Professor Sadanand Shantaram Pawar (47) to favour him in a kidnapping case, registered against him in June this year, Mr Shinde said. On December 20, Prof Pawar approached ACB and registered a complaint.....

Security beefed up in Kutch to check infiltration

Bhuj, Dec 28 (UNI) The International border in Kutch district of Gujarat, bordering Pakistan, has been put on high alert following reports of rise in infiltration from across the border in the wake of the assassination of former Pakistan Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto, whose funeral was held at Larkhana in Sindh, bordering Kutch.
