Resident editor of Daily appears before Assembly Speaker

New Delhi, Dec 28 (UNI) The resident editor of an English daily today appeared before the Speaker of the Delhi Legislative Assembly Prem Singh following a Privilege notice accepted in the House yesterday against it in connection with an article appearing in the December 27 edition of the newspaper.

Mr Prem Singh told the House today that the resident editor of the Times of India Arindam Sengupta and a senior officer of the daily appeared before him this morning in connection with the 'Breach of Privilege and Contempt of House' notice moved in the house yesterday by Bhalaswa Jahangirpuri MLA Zile Singh Chauhan against the daily for its article 'Delhi MLAs get Rs 40k for 10-min workday' that appeared in the December 27 issue of the newspaper.

Mr Prem Singh informed the House that summons had been issued to the editor and officials of the daily responsible for the article last night after the House accepted the notice.

The officials of the daily asked for three days time to issue clarifications on the matter which was granted by the Speaker.

He said that upon receiving the reply of the officials, the necessary action would be taken in the matter under the rules of the House.

Moving the notice in the House yesterday, Mr Zile Singh Chauhan termed the said article as a ''contempt of the House'' and demanded that the editor of the newspaper and other journalists concerned with the article be summoned in the House and strict action be taken against them.

''The editor and the correspondent who has written the said article should be summoned in the Assembly as the article amounts to character assassination of the members of the House,'' Mr Chauhan said.
