Poachers nabbed in Chhattisgarh

Pathalgaon, Chhattisgarh, Dec 28 (UNI) Six villagers were arrested today for using electrocution to poach elephants and other wild animals in Raigarh district's Dharamjaigarh Forest Division.

''The gang poached a tusker last week in Chhal Forest Circle.

Post mortem confirmed electrocution and monitoring was stepped up.

When the accused ventured forth today they were apprehended along with wire by forest officials,'' Divisional Forest Officer Hemant Pandey told UNI.

A case was registered under the Protection of Wildlife Act against Chandrakant Patel, Ganpat Patel, Amar Chand, Sukhlal, Lakhan Rathiya and Anuj Kumar.

''The officials concerned will be rewarded,'' Mr Pandey added.

Morning walkers stay indoors in Lahore

Mahinder records fifth straight win in HP polls

Shimla, Dec 28 (UNI) Mahinder Singh, BJP's candidate from Dharampur constituency in Mandi district of Himachal Pradesh, has recorded five straight victories in as many assembly elections from different parties every time. Mr Singh first contested and won the assembly elections from Dharampur in 1990 as an independent, defeating BJP's Priya Vrat. He won the 1993 assembly elections, this time on a Congress ticket, again defeating BJP's Ms Vrat and later resigned from it to join former union minister Sukh Ram's.....

Coffee Board unveails new variety 'Arabica'

Bangalore, Dec 28 (UNI) To provide a new thrust to the coffee industry, Coffee Board today unveiled a new variety of Arabica coffee plant 'Chandragiri', which would be planted in 30 per cent of the coffee grown area during the next 10 years. Coffee industry was hit hard by pest problems and ageing plantation, and the new variety 'Chandragiri', developed by the Board at its Central Coffee Research Centre at Balehonnur in Karnataka, was resistant to leaf frost and promises superior.....
