Need more performing centres to promote art

Kochi, Dec 28 (UNI) Renowned Ghazal singer Talat Aziz highlighted the need for more performing centres to promote art and culture in the country.

Speaking to reporters here yesterday, Mr Aziz said, ''media and others concerned should take the initiative to promote art and culture among common public.'' Supporting music reality shows on TV channels, he said they were the platform for young people to showcase their talent but the shows should not transgress the 'decency of the Indian society'.

Mr Aziz. who was here to perform at the State Tourism department's six-day cultural festival 'Vasanthotsavam', said music had no barriers and ghazals are being appreciated all around the globe.

People are not only enjoying the music, but also assimilating the true meaning of Urdu poetry,'' he noted.

Asked whether there was dearth of quality Urdu poetry, Mr Aziz said, ''there was no shortage of poetry as there was a vast collection of poems by classical and contemporary poets.'' Speaking about film music, Mr Aziz said playback singing had taken a beating as there is only ' techno-engineered' singing in the films now.

He reiterated there were other forms of medium other than films for an artist to showcase his talents.

He added that currently he is working on an album, which would feature poems of the classical Urdu poets.
