'Modern Market Mechanism' for agriculture on the card: CM

Kolkata, Dec 28 (UNI) The West Bengal government is evolving a 'Modern Market Mechanism' allowing corporate sector's entry into retail business for proper marketing of agricultural products, Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee said today.

Addressing the 153rd Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the Bengal Chamber of Commerce and Industry here, the Chief Minister said though the government was not in favour of foreign multinationals' access into retail business, investments from big domestic players in the field were necessary.

''We are working on a compromise formula for the retail business allowing domestic investors entry into it and also assuring the job security of the small businessmen,'' Mr Bhattacharjee observed.

He said though the 11th five-year plan has projected the overall growth rate of the country to 10 per cent, agriculture growth has been declined and all possible measures should be adopted for agriculture advancement.

Referring to industrialisation of the state, Mr Bhattacharjee said, ''The government wants growth of both agriculture and industry at the same pace and hence we will not allow any resistance from the opposition in regard to industrialisation of West Bengal.'' He said the government was not acquiring lands forcefully anywhere in the state for setting up industries and a proper rehabilitation package was made for them who offered lands.
