Lawson uncertain on return after Bhutto assassination

Melbourne, Dec 28 (UNI) Coach Geoff Lawson is undecided about returning to Pakistan after the assassination of former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto and the widespread unrest that followed.

''I'm making informal investigations with people I know in Pakistan to get their opinions,'' Lawson said. ''I've sent a few emails this morning just to people I know in Pakistan in different areas to get their opinions.'' ''I'm very open (to what they say) and I'm more likely to take into account what they've got to say rather than any officials,'' he added.

''I'm just seeking advice, I'm not pre-judging anything.'' The former Australian pacer is currently at home in Australia with his family. He is scheduled to return to Pakistan next month.

Lawson has completed five months of his two-year contract with the Pakistan Cricket Board and has a get-out clause in his deal if he decides to quit midway.

Dismissing fears for his personal safety if does decide to return, Lawson said,''Cricket is almost exempt from any sort of action because it's separate from the rest of society.

''That's why they're so obsessed by the sport, it's the one sport that represents their country in many ways and that's why they're very serious about it.'' Lawson was appointed as coach after Pakistan's disastrous campaign in the World Cup in the Carribeans earlier this year.
