IIT-K announces Rs.400 Cr. expansion of infrastructure

Kolkata, Dec 28(UNI) IIT, Kharagpur, today announced a major expansion plan in its infrastructure capacity to accommodate more students and enlarge its academic programmes.

The Chairman of the Board of Governors, Sanjiv Goenka, after unveiling a cluster of foundation stones said "this is by far the largest and perhaps the most ambitious amongst all recent investments in education in this country." Altogether Rs 400 crore would be invested in phased manner for expansion programme of the country's largest IITs.

"We are going to build in two phases 200 new classrooms, with a total capacity of 24,000 students. The estimated investment is Rs.

55.30 crore. Additionally, 200 tutorial classrooms with total seating capacity of 12000 students will be built at a cost of Rs.

22.17 crore," Mr Goenka said naming the new academic complex 'Nalanda'.

He unveiled the foundation stones of four laboratory complexes.

The new Chemical Sciences Laboratory Complex was dedicated to Acharya Prafulla Chandra Ray, the founding father of Indian chemical sciences. This complex would be built at a cost of Rs.9.1 crore, Mr Goenka said.

A 600-capacity hostel for girls students, to be named after Sister Nivedita, would be built at a cost of Rs.15.66 crore. Another B.R. Ambedkar Hall of Residence would accommodate 2000 students, while the Lal Bahadur Shastri Hall of Residence would have space for another 2000 students. The total estimated cost of these two halls would be around Rs.70 crore, he said.

Apart from these three new hostels, one more floor to existing halls would create additional capacity for 1500 students, he said adding the estimated cost would be around Rs.22 crore.

Cold wave sweeps region; Adampur records minus 0.6 degrees celsius

Chandigarh, Dec 28 (UNI) Cold wave swept north-west India wave with the mercury hovering one degree to five degrees below normal at many places in the region, touching minus 0.6 degrees Celsius at Adampur in Punjab today. People groaned under piercing cold wave even as a dense fog enveloped several areas, reducing visibility to 500 metres at Udhampur, 700 metres at Palam in Delhi and 800 metres at Sarsawa in the morning. Adampur coldest in Punjab at -0.6 degree Celsius

Jalandhar, Dec 28 (UNI) Adampur airbase near here today turned out to be the coldest place in Punjab, recording season's lowest temperature at minus 0.6 degree Celsius. A Defence spokesperson said the holy city of Amritsar witnessed 0.6 degree Celsius while Halwara airbase near Ludhiana was cold at 2.8 degree Celsius. Gujarat beat MP by 159 runs; enter Ranji Plate final

New Delhi, Dec 28 (UNI) A fine six wicket haul by S K Trivedi helped Gujarat defeat Madhya Pradesh (MP) by 159 runs on the penultimate day of their five-day Ranji Trophy Plate League semi-final here today.
