I am tribal

Shillong, Dec 28 (UNI) Union Tribal Affairs Minister's son Waibha Khyriem Kyndiah today maintained that he is a tribal as well as a Khasi.

Rubbishing allegations leveled against him that he was not a tribal and a non-Khasi by law, he said he had all documents to prove that he was a tribal.

Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council(KHADC) Chief Executive Member H S Shylla had claimed that Waibha Kyndiah was ''not a tribal'' after taking his father Patty Ripple Kyndiah's surname, violating the Khasi matrilineal system.

Mr Shylla's accusations came after the All India Congress Committee allotted a party ticket to the Kyndiah scion, contesting the coming Assembly polls from Nongkrem.

''I have the Scheduled Tribe(ST) certificate to prove that I am a tribal and a Khasi,'' Mr Waibha told reporters here.

The Union Minister's son is the official Congress candidate from Nongkrem constituency, a reserved seat for STs for the 2008 Assembly elections.

Stating that he had never rejected his mother's surname, Mr Waibha said ''My actual name in all my certificates is Waibha Khyriem Kyndiah. Khyriem is my mother's surname.'' Mr Waibha today also shot off a letter to Meghalaya Congress Committee President O L Nongtdu, to refrain Shylla from making baseless allegations against his Khasi lineage and tribal status.

''The party must initiate disciplinary action against Shylla,'' the letter toMr Nongtdu said, a copy of which has been sent to AICC General Secretaries Margaret Alva, Oscar Fernandez and Chief Minister DD Lapang.

In his letter, Mr Waibha said, the continuous diatribe on him was hurting the party's prospect for the ensuing Assembly elections.

''The conduct of Shylla was not only anti-party but also propaganda against AICC's decision to allot him a party ticket,'' he added.
