Delhi books semifinal berth with big win over TN

Chennai, Dec 28 (UNI) Former champions Delhi made it to the semifinals with a big eight-wicket victory over Tamil Nadu in the last super league match of the Elite group 'A' Ranji Trophy cricket championship here today.

At the M A Chidambaram stadium, Delhi's grim battle to overhaul Mumbai and qualify as the second team from the group for the knockout stage ended in success as they reached the victory target of 105, losing just two wickets in 25.5 overs.

Delhi resumed their second innings with the overnight score of 10 withut loss. Overnight batsmen Akash Chopra (17, 49 balls, 1 X 4) and India star left-hander Gautam Gambhir (40, 58 balls, 7 X 4) fell to Tamil Nadu off spinner S Suresh Kumar (1-38) and left armer C Suresh (1-30).

However, another of their star batsmen Mithun Manhad (31 n.o, 21 balls, 4 X 4) and Sikhar Dhawan (14 n.o, 33 balls, 2 X 4) steered Delhi to an easy win, 91 minutes after the fourth and final day's play began.

Delhi, who had 18 points, on a par with reigning champions Mumbai when they came into this match, completed their engagements with a tally of 23 points. Tamil Nadu, who had lost their second match outright in the league, playing on home turf, ended with 13 points.

Union Home Ministry to reduce security contingent in Tripura

Agartala, Dec 28 (UNI) The Union Home Ministry has decided to reduce the Central Paramilitary forces for the ensuing Tripura Assembly Elections to be held in February on the recommendations of the Election Commission of India (ECI).
