Contraceptive pill for males coming soon

London, Dec 28 (UNI) For all those males who hate using condoms as a contraceptive method during love-making, here comes a pill that helps prevent pregnancy without affecting libido and fertility.

As against the hormone-laden contraceptive pills that leads to breast cancer and fatal blood clots among females, this male version, known as CDB-4022, is hassle and hormone-free, the scientists said.

So far, the drug has been tested only on animals. But, human trials are expected to start soon, the Daily Mail reported.

The research showed that the drug quickly blocks sperm production without affecting the hormone levels such as testosterone, and libido and fertility.

However, for the first few weeks men would have to use an alternative method of contraception along with the pill, until the mature sperm reach the end of their short lifespan, the research noted.

Reiterating the advantages of pill, male fertility expert at Sheffield University and secretary of the British Fertility Society, Allan Pacey said, ''Anything that could be taken at home every day as a pill and would change the production or quality of sperm very quickly without changing hormones is a good thing.'' The drug would not protect against sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), Dr Pacey said, adding that the method was most likely to appeal to those in a committed relationship.
