Benazir death is a colossal tragedy for Pakistan: CWC

New Delhi, Dec 28 (UNI) The Congress Working Committee(CWC) today condoled the death of former Pakistan Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto and said her supreme sacrifice for the cause of democracy in the neighbouring country will continue to be a source of inspiration for those who have firm faith in the spirit of democracy.

Expressing its deep sense of shock and grief at Bhutto's ''brutal'' murder, the CWC said in a resolution that ''her assassination is yet another reminder of the grave challenge posed by the forces of terror and violence''.

''This reprehensible and cowardly act which has brutally cut short a life full of promise and potential deserves to be strongly condemned by civilised society.'' The CWC, the highest policy-making body of the party that heads the coalition at the Centre, held an emergency meeting, chaired by President Sonia Gandhi, at the party headquarters at 24 Akbar road, to condole Bhutto's demise.

The meeting was held immediately after Ms Gandhi hoisted the party flag at the headquarters as part of the Foundation day of the 122-year-old party.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh was not present in the meeting as he is away in Goa on a two-day visit.

Describing her as a ''popular and charismatic leader'', the resolution said her loss, especially at this critical juncture, is a colossal tragedy for the people of Pakistan. Her death is equally a loss for the entire region of South Asia." Acknowledging Bhutto's involvement in the task of restoring the democratic process in Pakistan, the CWC further said, ''She did not hesistate to risk her life in pursuing the objective of restoration of democracy with courage, commitment and dedication.'' The Committee conveyed its heartfelt condolences to the members of her family, the Pakistan People's Party and the people of Pakistan.
