Vijayawada, Dec 28: Within 24 hours of a 19-year-old girl student being killed by an unidentified person in a private girl's hostel at Ibrahimpatnam, near here, a watchwoman and an inmate of a Scheduled Caste girls' hostel at Nandigama in Krishna district were assaulted by miscreants, early today.

Police said the unidentified miscreants came to the hostel for allegedly molesting the girls, as a similar attempt by them earlier had been reportedly foiled by the locals.

When the watchwoman Varalakshmi tried to resist the culprits, they attacked her with sticks, grievously injuring her on the head and another girl in the eye. The culprits then fled the scene, fearing rebellion from the locals, police added.

The injured were initially rushed to a hospital at Nandigama. As Varalakshmi's condition became critical, she was shifted to a private hospital here, and the girl was admitted to the Vijayawada Government General Hospital.
