623 star tortoises seized, one arrested

Chennai, Dec 28 (UNI) As many as 623 live star tortoises, worth Rs five lakh in the international market, were seized from a passenger of the Chennai-Colombo Sri Lankan Airlines at the Anna International airport here, last night.

Airport sources here said that during routine Customs check, the authorities checked the baggage of one Ahmed Siraj (23) of Ilayangudi in Ramanathapuram district and found the reptiles. Siraj was bound for Bangkok via Colombo.

A case was registered under the Customs Act. Siraj was arrested and the tortoises were handed over to the forest officials.

Centre targets 14,000 MW renewable energy generation

Hyderabad, Dec 28 (UNI) Ministry of Non-Conventional Energy Sources Adviser N P Singh today said the Ministry targets to generate 14,000 MW renewable energy in the 11th five-year plan in the country. Speaking at a State-level orientation-cum-training programme on renewable energy organised by the Non-Conventional Energy Development Corporation of Andhra Pradesh Limited (NEDCAP) here, he said the Centre would give priority to generation of more renewable energy by using natural resources in the 11th plan. Work on repopulating Sariska tiger sanctuary gains steam

New Delhi, Dec 28 (UNI) Tigers from Ranthambhore Sanctuary would soon be shifted to repopulate barren Sariska reserve. Officials of the Wildlife Institute of India(WII), Dehradun, are at present visiting Ranthambhore to select cubs and grown-up tigers for the Sariska sanctuary, which became infamous two years back for having lost all of its tigers, creating nationwide uproar. ''Our team of experts would soon finish their job, and then the animals can be shifted,'' WII director V B Mathur told UNI.....

BJP dissolves key posts, to accommodate youth

Puducherry, Dec 28 (UNI) To impart fresh impetus to the party here, the BJP today dissolved all its posts, barring the state president and general secretary. Addressing a press conference, BJP State President M Visweswaran said the posts were dissolved to give youth a chance and accommodate them in key posts. All the posts would be reconstituted in consultation with the party high command. Mr Visweswaran demanded that the administration should come out with a white paper on the money received.....
