Tunnel at Zojila pass, Srinagar-Leh highway again reopened

Kargil, Dec 27 (UNI) The Border Roads Organisation (BRO), which is transforming the 434-km-long Srinagar-Leh national highway into an all weather road, (BRO) has invited tenders for consultancy service to carry out detailed feasibility study for a tunnel at Zojila pass.

Meanwhile, because of dry weather, the highway, which was closed officially on November 15, was thrown open for essential services while the World Bank has approved Rs 26 crores for improvement and upgradation of the Kargil-Zanaskar road.

Official sources said the BRO has invited tender for phase wise project report for Zojila tunnel to make the Srinagar-Leh highway all weather road.

In the first phase the BRO has invited tenders for consultancy service to carry out detailed feasibility study for a tunnel at Zojila pass, the most troubled spot on the highway.

The highway remained closed for six winter months from November every year because of ten to 30 feet of snowfall at different points.

However, this year because of almost dry weather, it was decided to allow trucks carrying essential supplies to ply on the highway.

Only vehicles carrying essentials, including fresh vegetables, meat and eggs, would be allowed to move towards Kargil from Srinagar, the sources added.

They said Chief Executive Councilor of Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council (LAHDC) Haji Asgar Karbalayee visted Zojil, Sonmarg and Zero points yesterday to take stock of the road condition.

It was decided to take every possible step to meet any eventuality in the event of snowfall at Zojila where five people were killed and about a dozen trucks buried under snow last year.
