'SR will attain annual target': GM

Tiruchirapalli, Dec 27 (UNI) Southern Railway (SR) will attain the annual target of moving 31.4 million tonnes of freight in the current financial year, General Manager Rakesh Chopra said today.

Talking to newspersons here, he said though there was a set back in freight movement in the last few months, 19 million tonnes of freight mobilisation had already been achieved so far.

During the last year, the SR had mobilised 30 million tonnes of freight, he said.

He said efforts were afoot to improvise the operating ratio and within one year SR would achieve 99 per cent rating when compare to the current ratio of 110. The initiatives include running of more special trains, inclusion of additional passenger coaches and wagons, drastic cut in expenditure and saving of fuel.

Referring to the pending projects, he said in the current year it was handling new projects worth Rs 1,000 crore which include Gauge Convertion Works for about 320 km and doubling the track for a length of 77 kms.

To a question, he said the delay in implementing the Karur-Salem new BG line was due to land acquisition. However, the 18 month schedule would be adhered to.

He said about 1,200 km length of Metre gauge were pending for convertion to Broad gauge in SR and that also would be taken up in full complement during the 11th five year plan.

He said the modernisation plan for golden rock railway workshop at an outlay of Rs 90 crore was pending with the Railway Board for sanction and immediately on the sanction, the implementation would be accomplished within a period of three years.

He said the electrification work between Villupuram and Vridhachalam was expected to be completed by March next and from Vridhachalam to Tiruchirapalli was expected to be covered by September next.
