Severe chill returns, mercury dips to 4.8

New Delhi, Dec 27 (UNI) Severe chill returned to the capital today with the mercury plummeting to 4.8 degrees Celsius, two degrees below normal.

The minimum temperature, which was 8.3 degrees C yesterday, further dropped four notches. Visibility was 700 metres.

The maximum also dropped slightly to 22 degrees Celsius which was normal. It was 23 degrees yesterday.

The Met office forecast mainly clear sky tomorrow with light mist likely in the morning.

A further drop in the night temperature has been predicted for the next two days.

The minimum temperature is likely to drop to 4 degrees Celsius tomorrow.

Indian forces on border alerted, states to be vigilant

New Delhi, Dec 27 (UNI) India today alerted its forces on the border and advised states to maintain vigil in view of the assassination of former Pakistan premier Benazir Bhutto in Rawalpindi. The forces on the Indo-Pak border have been asked to remain vigilant to foment any possible threat of infilteration or other kind of threat. States have also been asked to remain vigilant, a home ministry spokesman said here today. UNI.....

2 Shiv Sainiks detained for protest against M F Hussain

New Delhi, Dec 27 (UNI) Two Shiv Sena activists were taken into preventive detention by the police today after they shouted slogans and damaged a painting of renowned artist M F Hussain worth Rs 1.5 lakh at the art gallery of the India International Centre here. Lok Sabha Speaker condemns attack on Bhutto

Santiniketan, Dec 27 (UNI) Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chatterjee today condemned the assassination of Pakistan Opposition leader and former prime minister Benazir Bhutto and warned the government against possible impact of militant activities in India. ''It is a sad incident and we condemn it,'' Mr Chatterjee said and added, ''The Centre and state governments should take necessary measures to face any terror attacks on our country from across the border.''
