Pranab defends joint military exercise with China

Bangalore, Dec 27 (UNI) Strongly defending the first-ever Indo-China joint anti-terrorism military exercise 'Hand-in-Hand 2007', External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee today described it as a part of India's 'security strategy'.

Talking to newspersons on the sidelines of the 80th conference of the Nikhil Bharat Banga Sahithya Sammelan, he said it was a practice and the policy of the Indian Government to interact and organise joint exercises with various countries.

''The joint military exercise is also to demonstrate that India and China are working together on various bilateral issues,'' he added.

Mr Mukherjee said India had held such joint military exercises with Russia, the United States, the United Kingdom, Singapore, France, Malaysia and Thailand, apart from China.

The latest joint military exercise with China was the outcome of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between the Defence Ministries of China and India on May 29, 2006, for exchange and cooperation in the field of defence.

Tribal Ministry seeks reports on Orissa violence

Shillong, Dec 27 (UNI) Union Tribal Affairs Minister Patty Ripple Kyndiah has said the communal violence at Kandhmal on the eve of Christmas was unfortunate and sought a report from the Orissa government on the clashes, official sources here said. TRAI forwards report on voluntary CAS, digitalisation to I

New Delhi, Dec 27 (UNI) The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) today said it had forwarded the report on digitalisation and introduction of Voluntary CAS along with the comments of 16 stakeholders to the of Information and Broadcasting Ministry. ''It is expected that this report will be useful in deciding the roadmap for bringing about addressability in the cable TV sector,'' it said. The major recommendations in the Group's report are: Voluntary CAS would be a non-starter unless the date.....

Railway production units exceed targets

New Delhi, Dec 27 (UNI) All the production units of Indian Railways, including Chitranjan Locomotive Works (CLW) and Rail Coach Factory (RCF), exceeded their targets during the first eight months of the fiscal 2007-08. CLW produced 115 electric engines against the target of 112 while Diesel Locomotive Works (DLW) produced 154 diesel locomotives against the target of 145 during April-November. RCF manufactured 917 coaches though the target was set at 911 coaches whereas Integral Coach Factory (ICF) produced 788.....
