Police sounded high alert in Ramanathapuram district

Ramanathapuram, Dec 27 (UNI) A high alert was sounded by the police in Ramanathapuram district in view of assassination of Pakistan's former Prime Minister Mrs.Benazir Bhutto in a suicide bomber attack in Rawalpindi, today.

Police personnel were deployed at vantage points and vehicular checkups were intensified.

Surveillance on the entire coastal belt of the district was also intensified, a police official said.

The police were maintaining round-the-clock vigil in the district and check posts were alerted to keep maximum vigil, he added.

Mrs Bhutto outstanding woman leader of sub-continent : Pranab

New Delhi, Dec 27 (UNI) External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee today described Pakistan's former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto as a ''brave and outstanding woman leader of the sub-continent,'' and said her assassination should strengthen the resolve to fight terrorism. Expressing shock and horror at the killing, the External Affairs Minister said Ms. Bhutto's contributions to democracy, improvement of India-Pakistan relations and the restoration of normalcy within Pakistan would be an inspiration. AICC to announce Karunakaran re-entry on December 30

New Delhi, Dec 27(UNI) As a prelude to his re-admission into the Congress Party, former Kerala Chief Minister K Karunakaran will meet Congress President Sonia Gandhi here on Sunday. A formal announcement about the re-entry of 91-year-old Mr Karunakran, who had served the Congress Party for about seven decades before leaving it to launch an outfit of his own 31 months ago, would come after the meeting. Badal expresses shock over Benazir's assassination

Chandigarh, Dec 27 (UNI) Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal today said that the assassination of the former Pakistan Prime Minister Ms Benazir Bhutto was ''too shocking for words.'' In a statement here today, Mr Badal said Ms Bhutto's efforts to restore democracy in her country will long be remembered. The Chief Minister also shared his heartfelt sympathies with the members of the bereaved family and prayed to the Almighty to give strength and courage to bear this irreparable loss.....
