Parts of Dal freeze as temp. dipped to -4.4

Srinagar, Dec 27 (UNI) Parts of the world famous Dal Lake were again partially forzen early this morning after the minimum temperature dipped to minus 4.4 degree celsius, 2.5 degree below normal.

However, Drass, second coldest place in the world after Siberia, was coldest in the state with minimum temperature recorded at minus 20 degree while at Leh it was minus 16.8 degree and kargil recorded 16, official sources said.

Because of clear sky as Western Disturbances (WD) from Arabian sea coming through Afghanistan and Pakistan were very weak, which leads to parts of the lake freezing.

However, since the maximum temperature was above normal, the frozen parts again melted as the day progressed.

Tapes and water in small pounds besides nallahs were also frozen because of cold.

The authorities have already stopped supply of water through tapes because of freezing temperature. Water is being supplied through water tankers in these places.

Collective approach a must to restore Dal Lake glory: Kundal

Srinagar, Dec 27 (UNI) Concerned over the deteriorating condition of the world famous Dal Lake, Jammu and Kashmir Chief Secretary B R Kundal has underscored the need for collective and coordinated approach to save the water body. Official sources said authorities have decided to disconnect electricity and water supply to all houses and other structures constructed illegally near the Lake. Cancel eviction notices served to poor farmers: BJP

Hyderabad, Dec 27 (UNI) The BJP today urged State Human Rights Commission Chairman Justice Subhashan Reddy to direct the state government to cancel the eviction notices served to poor farmers in East Godavari district. BJP State President Bandaru Dattatreya, in a memorandum submitted to Human Rights Commission, said the government had served notices to 1623 farmers, belonging to Scheduled Castes (SCs), in 16 villages as per the High Court order. Bangalore, Dec 27 (UNI) Alpasankhyataru Hinudlidavaru Mattu Dalitaru (AHINDA) convener N V Narasimhaiah today sought immediate dismissal of former Karnataka Minister and senior Congress leader Mahadev from the party.
