Nations are losing democratic character: Chaubey

Mumbai, Dec 27 (UNI) Every nation is losing its democratic character by resorting to violence against its sovereigns--people, while 'think globally and act locally' does not seem to be holding water anymore as whole world is in turmoil and upsurge everywhere, Mr N P Chaubey, General Secretary of the Indian Academy of Social Sciences, said today.

He was speaking to reporters at the 31st Indian Social Sciences Congress, which will continue till December 31.

The focal theme of of the congress is ''People's Struggles and Movements for Equitable Society''.

The meeting was inaugurated by Nitin Mungekar, President of Indian Social Science Congress and a member of Planning Commission.

Mr Mungekar said ''Democracy of all Democratic Republics is on the wane. Fascism of a new kind is rising fast. All theories of LPG based on new international order have proved invalid, adding that, the life supporting attributes of planet earth are on their way to extinction.'' Mr Chaubey informed ''The focal theme has been chosen with a view of discovering developing and disseminating a new scientific knowledge relevant to creating a new democratic global society free from hunger, poverty, illiteracy, unemployment and violence of any sort where people can enjoy higher quality of life.'' The event is being held under the auspices of the SNDT Women's University and Dr Ambedkar Institute for Social and Economic Change.
