MCD vying for Carbon Credits through state-of-the art Civic Centre

New Delhi, Dec 27 (UNI) Mayor Aarti Mehra today promised to help the Municipal Corporation of Delhi earn Carbon Credits--key component of national and international emissions trading schemes--with the completion of its environment friendly Civic Centre by March 2008.

Inspecting the underconstruction Civic Centre here, Ms Mehra told newspersons that the 28-storeyed building, the headquarters of the MCD, would also be a 24-hour live spot rather than a 9 to 5 office complex.

The Rs 550 crore building, being designed as per the best Engineering practices in energy and natural resource conservation method, would have solar energy based outdoor lighting and water heating systems. Lighting management system with dimmer control and occupancy/daylight sensors, rainwater harvesting and use of environment friendly fly ash bricks are some of the features that would help cut greenhouse gas emissions.

The Mayor expressed satisfaction at the progress of the work being undertaken in collaboration with Malayasian based company, IJM, which has deployed over 1500 workers from its country. Modern equipment manufactured abroad were being used for the state of the art building, including chillers from the US, escalators from China and Switzerland and DG sets from Germany.

Town Hall, the present MCD headquarters, has already been declared a heritage building and is located in a congested area making it difficult for the public to reach there. The present complex would be vacated as soon as the present complex, spread over 12 acres, is ready.

The Civic Centre, expected to witness more than 16,000 footfalls per day, promises to be the tallest building of the Capital and would have a floor area of 1.16 lakh sq. mts of which 50 per cent would be commercial offices.
