Kandhmal limping back to nomalcy: CM

Bhubaneswar, Dec 27 (UNI) Orissa Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik today said the situation in Kandhmal, where communal clashes broke out between tribals and Christians, is slowly limping back to normalcy.

speaking to newspersons here, after visiting the affected areas, Mr Patnaik said the situation there had been normalised and a peace committee had been formed in different places to restore and maintain peace and normalcy.

When asked whether he would consider the demands of the Kui Samaj, the chief minister said the grievances and request of the people would be looked into and their problems sorted out.

The Kui Samaj has been demanding not to accord SC status to the converted Christians.

The chief minister, who reviewed the situation at Phulbani alongwith Director General of Police G C Nanda, Inspector General of Police, DIG, Revenue Divisional Commissioner(Southern Range) and other officers, admitted that some churches and prayer houses were damaged during the last four days and one people died in the communal clash.

Mr Patnaik said action was being taken against the culprits and paramilitary forces along with state armed police forces were deployed in the area.

He said till today only one person was killed and more than two dozens of people have been arrested in connection with the violence and communal clash.

State Home Secretary Tarunkanti Mishra said no untoward incident was reported from the district since last afternoon and hoped that the situation would be normalised by this evening.

He said around 4,000 trees were cut and put on the road to block the movement of vehicles during the last four days. Most of the roads had been cleared with the help of the Disaster Rapid Action Force UNI

Parts of Dal freeze as temp. dipped to -4.4

Srinagar, Dec 27 (UNI) Parts of the world famous Dal Lake were again partially forzen early this morning after the minimum temperature dipped to minus 4.4 degree celsius, 2.5 degree below normal.
