Pune, Dec 27 (UNI) A Sessions Court today pronounced death sentence to a woman-daughter duo for their involvement in the sensational murder of orthopaedician Deepak Mahajan in June last year.
Delivering the judgement, Sessions Judge Vilas Patil found the accused Lina Devasthali and her daughter Dipti, who were relatives of Dr Mahajan, guilty of extortion, abduction and gruesome murder.
Pronouncing the judgement, Judge Patil said considering the heinous act, both mother and daughter can not be shown any leniency with the exception of death penalty.
As many as 46 witnesses were examined by the court in the case.
Dr Mahajan, who was with YCM Hospital, had been sedated, abducted and murdered by the mother-daughter duo on July 4, 2006. The Deccan Gymkhana police, who investigated the case, arrested the mother-daughter duo on July 7.
According to the police, the mother and daughter hatched a plan to murder Dr Mahajan after extracting a whooping amount of Rs 25 lakh from him. They hacked his body to pieces and dumped the body parts in secluded areas of Katraj ghat and Nashik Road area. It took them a year and seven months to come to the conclusion on December 7 this year.
Dr Mahajan, who stayed at Vikramgad Building at Anand Colony off Prabhat Road, worked with Yashwantrao Chavan Memorial Hospital, while Leena was from Nashik and owned a detective agency there.
Leena also did film scripts, while her daughter claimed to have written books on cookery and beauty treatment, police said.
Dr Mahajan had been approached by a woman claiming to be associated with the Mumbai-based Omkar Charitable Trust on July 1 and offered him a job at a hospital they were setting up at Nigdi.
Though Mahajan initially turned it down, on July 2 he went to meet them.
Later, when Dr Mahajan's wife called him on his mobile, an unidentified man told her that he had been kidnapped and they would soon get in touch with her. His family reported the matter to the Deccan Gymkhana police station. On July 4, the family received a call asking for Rs 25 lakh ransom, police added.
