Congress, BJP confident of winning HP polls

Shimla, Dec 27 (UNI) Both the Congress and the BJP have expressed confidence that they would emerge victorious in the Himachal Pradesh Assembly elections, which were held in two phases on November 14 and December 19.

While the Congress claims that phenomenal development works by the state government during the last four and half years would ensure its victory in the elections, the BJP was confident of winning about 45 seats in the hustlings.

Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh said developmental works of his congress government would help the party in coming back to power in the state.

''The party will form the next government in the state in any condition,'' he asserted.

Sources within the party said it was also pinning its hopes on a few rebel party candidates who were expected to emerge victorious in these elections.

On the other hand, BJP's chief ministerial candidate Prem Kumar Dhumal has already said that the party would win at least 45 seats and form the government.

''In the worst-to worst scenario, the party is expected to win at least 35 to 36 seats to form the next government,'' he added.

Doctor shot dead, wife escapes attack in Karnal

Karnal, Dec 27 (UNI) A known dentist was shot dead by a suspected thief while his wife escaped unhurt in the attack at their Urban Estate residence here early today. Haj aspirants cheated of Rs 4.5 lakh; agent arrested

Nashik, Dec 27 (UNI) A case of cheating of Haj pilgrimage aspirants has come to light in Malegaon town of the district. According to police, Hilal Ahmed Naseem Ahmed, owner of Al Hilal Tours and Travels company in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, had taken a sum of Rs 4,48,000 from Ansari Abdul Zakir Aziz (40), a resident of Malegaon, in November 2007 assuring him passports and other arrangements for some Haj aspirants. Ansari, who arranges Haj tours for people, had collected a sum.....

Man attempts suicide due to police harassment

Akola, Dec 27 (UNI) A man attempted to commit suicide by setting himself on fire at Mahatma Fhule Nagar in Khadan locality of the city due to harassment and extortion demands by police. Rashtrapal Rajaram Wankhade, who set himself on fire on Monday, received 22 per cent burn injuries. He was admitted in the general hospital, where he went into coma. Rashtrapal regained consciousness yesterday and narrated his woes. On October 28, Rashtrapal's mother, Ratnaprabha Wankhede had a quarrel with her.....
