Cong High Command green signal for Karunakaran, to meet Sonia

Thiruvananthapuram, Dec 27(UNI) Welcoming the Congress High Command's green signal for his re-entry into the party fold, yeteran leader K Karunakaran today said he will meet AICC President Sonia Gandhi soon.

Reacting to an invitation from the High Command to meet Ms Gandhi, he told reporters here it was ''most welcome'' and admitted to receiving a call from Congress General Secretary and Kerala Party Affairs Incharge Mohsina Kidwai.

''Most probably, I will be meeting the (AICC) President on Sunday,'' he said.

When asked who had taken the initiative for his re-entry into the parent party, Mr Karunakaran said everybody had their role and the High Command realised the general feeling of the workers. ''I am quite satisfied about it,'' he added.

On his priority after returning to the Congress, he said ''my aim will be to strengthen the party.

''I will contact and seek advice from senior leaders in this regard,'' he said and added the Congress would use the power of those who had the ability to strengthen the party, as it was quite necessary in the light of Gujarat election results.

The former Chief Minister had announced plans to rejoin the Congress after a three-year-long estrangement, admitting it was a mistake to leave the party which he had served for over seven decades.

In 2003, Mr Karunakaran fielded a rebel Congress candidate in the Rajya Sabha polls.

Two years later, he formed the Democratic Indira Congress - Karunakaran (DIC-K). In 2006, he merged it with the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP).
