Centre sends additional force to Orissa following communal clashes

New Delhi, Dec 27 (UNI) The Centre has despatched additional para military forces to Orissa following the state government's request in view of the communal clashes between tribals and Christians.

The Centre was keeping a close watch on situation witnessed between tribals and Christians in Kandhmal district.

Special Secretary M Kumawat spoke to the Director General of Police (DGP) of Orissa Gopal Chandra Nanda to get details of the incidents and the situation in the state.

Meanwhile, curfew was lifted in Phulbani town this morning while it remained in force in other areas of Kandhmal district, which had witnessed communal clashes between tribals and Christians.

Curfew was imposed first in Baliguda and Phulbani on December 23 night and later in Daringibadi, Phiringia and Tikabali, following widespread violence after a clash between the two communities.

The district was rocked by a communal flare on December 24 after a group of Christians tried to forcibly occupy the Durgamandap and erect a gate to celebrate Christmas.

Orissa Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik and the DGP today visited Kandhamal to review the volatile situation prevailing in the distirct over the past three days.

Leaders condemn attack on Christians in Orissa

New Delhi, Dec 27 (UNI) Former Prime Minister V P Singh and CPI(M) leader and MP Brinda Karat today condemned the attack on the ''poor Christians'' in Orissa calling it 'unfortunate and appalling''. They were part of a peaceful prayer for peace dharna and a candlelight vigil held at the Orissa Niwas this evening to protest the continuing violence against the Christians since December 25. Centre taking Orissa issue seriously: Patil to Church leaders

New Delhi, Dec 27 (UNI) Union Home Minister Shivraj Patil today assured a delegation of church leaders that the Centre was taking the issue of the attack on the community seriously and all efforts were being made to bring normalcy in the Phulbani area of Orissa which had witnessed clashes between tribals and Christians. Pranab expresses 'utter shock, horror' at Benazir killing

New Delhi, Dec 27 (UNI) External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee expressed shock at the assassination of Pakistan's former Prime Minister Beznazir Bhutto saying he was at a loss for words. Minister of State for External Affairs Anand Sharma also expressed ''utter shock and horror'' at the incident. ''We are shocked and saddened...We are at a loss for words...,'' the External Affairs Minister said. Former External Affairs Minister Natwar Singh said he was ''shattered'' at the tragedy which is not.....
